Chouinard, 76, founded Patagonia in the 1970s. It became known for its environmental focus and ethical working conditions. Patagonia offers healthy, subsidised food to employees and on-site childcare. And it gives away one per cent of sales to 650 environmental organisations. In the early 1990s, Chouinard committed to using all pesticide-free cotton, creating the organic cotton industry in California. He claims to have made money every time he has made a decision that is best for the planet.
