Nareen Shammo, 28, is a minority rights activist and former journalist from Bahzani, an Assyrian town located in northern Iraq. Since the rise of ISIS, she has become dedicated to saving the women of the minority ethnic and religious Yazidi population.
So far, she has rescued some 700 female hostages, who had been raped, sold on slavery markets and forced to convert to Islam. Shammo continues to track kidnapped Yazidi women and helps negotiate their return home.
