Urvashi Butalia, 63, shows indefatigable commitment to guaranteeing women’s rights through the printed word. From her days with the progressive feminist magazine Manushi in the 1970s to the opening of India’s first feminist publishing house Kali for Women in 1984 to her own writing on India’s modern history, Butalia has always campaigned to raise the status and perception of women in India from second-class citizens to empowered equals. Her second feminist publishing house Zubaan Books was founded in 2003.
