Following the death of her 16-month-old son at her home in Colombia, healthcare professional Catalina Escobar began tackling the staggeringly high infant mortality rate in the hospital where she worked.

She identified extreme poverty as a key contributor, and in 2002 she opened the Juan Felipe Gómez Escobar Foundation to provide teenage mothers with education and comprehensive support services. Her efforts have helped decrease the rate of infant mortality in her community by 80 per cent.
