The German chancellor and de facto EU leader is regarded by many as the most powerful woman in the world and featured as the 2015 TIME Magazine Person of the Year. Germany’s first ever female in the role, Angela Merkel is currently serving her third term as leader. Merkel, who grew up behind the wall in East Germany, now oversees a thriving economy in a united country.
Whilst in office, she has steered Germany away from recession through stimulative policies. She also has an inarguably compassionate political approach. She has welcomed unprecedented numbers of refugees in the wake of the Syrian war, backed Kurdish fighters against ISIS and attempted to broker peace between Ukraine and Russia. From her time as environment minister, she promised to reduce Germany’s greenhouse gases, continuing that pledge as chancellor.
