Rigoberta Menchú was the first indigenous person to receive the Nobel Peace Prize, in 1992, for publicising the plight of indigenous peoples during the Guatemalan civil war and working towards reconciliation.

She has served as the UN goodwill ambassador for indigenous rights and also ran for the Guatemalan presidency.
