Ohio-born Ted Turner, 76, is the founder of Cable News Network (CNN), the first 24-hour news channel. But he is also an important American philanthropist. He gave US$1 billion to create the public charity, the United Nations Foundation. And in 1990, he created the Turner Foundation to aid efforts to protect the environment, including projects to improve air and water quality, develop sustainable energy, protect wildlife and curb population growth. The Foundation has given more than US$300 million to hundreds of organisations.
