Shirin Ebadi, removed as Tehran’s first female judge in 1979, returned to legal practice in 1993 in order to defend the rights of women, children and refugees.

Ebadi’s human rights caseload earned her Iran’s first Nobel Peace Prize in 2003, but her criticism of the Iranian regime has forced her into exile since 2009.
