Tawakkol Karman, 36, is a journalist and politician who has dedicated her life to press freedom and women’s rights in Yemen. The first Arab woman to receive the Nobel Peace Prize, Karman leads the international group Women Journalists Without Chains, which advocates freedoms as well as revealing rights abuses against journalists.
She oversaw Yemeni protests against government oppression, eventually leading her people to support the Arab Spring in 2011. Known as the Mother of the Revolution and The Iron Woman, she has been repeatedly imprisoned for her opposition to injustice.
