On 23 September 2015, human rights lawyer and feminist researcher Yara Sallam was released from prison after her original 3-year sentence was cut short.

She had been arrested in June 2014 with 22 others for peacefully demonstrating against Egypt’s “Protest Law”, which came into effect after the military takeover in 2013 and which bans unauthorised gatherings of 10 people or more. Sallam, 30, who began actively defending social justice causes at age 15, has now become an international symbol of resistance.
