In 2011, Leymah Gbowee was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for her peace and women’s rights activism through her Women of Liberia Mass Action for Peace movement. She led the interreligious alliance of thousands of Christian and Muslim women, all dressed in white, demonstrating against the violence, rape and brutality of the 1999-2003 Liberian civil war .

Their grand-scale, non-violent efforts helped push the infamous President Charles Taylor into exile and lead to the peace talks that ultimately ended the war. Gbowee is dedicated to providing opportunities for women and girls in West Africa via the Gbowee Peace Foundation Africa.
