In the Xinjiang region of China, businesswoman Rabiya Kadeer, 69, is the lead rights defender of her own ethnic Uyghur people. She provides employment and education opportunities for Uyghur women and children and speaks passionately about the difficulties facing her people.
For her controversial activism, Kadeer has spent five years in prison and twice been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. She now leads the World Uyghur Congress in Washington, DC, where she continues to advocate for Uyghur self-determination.
