- Fashion model and designer
Alek Wek, 38, has been hailed for revolutionising perceptions of beauty in the fashion industry since becoming the first African model to appear on the cover of Elle magazine. In 1991, Wek fled civil war in Sudan, making her way to Britain and launching her meteoric carrier.
Off the catwalk, Wek devotes her time to supporting the Sudanese people as an ambassador for Doctors Without Borders, World Vision and Unicef, and as an advisor to the US Committee for Refugees.
