Jane Goodall, 81, started her pioneering work with Tanzania’s chimpanzees at the age of 26, and she went on to carry out the longest-ever study of any wild animal over the next 55 years. Her efforts have revolutionised our understanding of primates.

Goodall is an influential champion of animal rights and conservation.
